I’m super excited to announce that I’ve just been invited to give a workshop plus perform at the Mountain Skies Electro-Music Festival in Asheville (the home of Moog Synthesizers). Here is a little blurb about the festival.
About the Show
The Mountain Skies electro-music festival brings some of the world's finest electronic and experimental musicians to Asheville, North Carolina. They will be joined by local artists for two days of concerts, workshops, demonstrations and collaborations. Musical styles cover a broad spectrum, guaranteed to be creative and original. Live video art will accompany the concerts, for an immersive multi-media experience. The musicians employ a wide variety of electronic and acoustic instruments, from synthesizers and theremins to found objects and custom controllers. Afternoons will feature hands-on workshops and jam sessions open to everyone.
I’m really honored be included in such a fantastic lineup!

On October 29, 2011 I Skyped into the Pacific Northwest Synth Fest from my studio in Boulder. In this photo you can see I was being projected in the room and there was a laptop under the projection so I could see and hear the audience take questions. I presented on Percussa AudioCubes and performed a few songs. The laptop gives you a sense of scale for the projection size. I've been working on my streaming set up so that I can broadcast high fidelity audio, hear my rig in my headphones, plus hear the other side of the conversation in my headphones as well. It all worked great!
Matrixsynth captured the last 15 minutes of my talk on his iPhone 4s. A majority of the talk is on the technical detail of using Percussa AudioCubes so to spare you from the technical details I went ahead and placed a copy of the video bookmarked to start at a musical performance of the song “I Can See Them” from the album I Hear Your Signals. You can of course start from the beginning of the video to catch the talk.
I actually started the talk with a performance of “First Orbit” from the same album. I don’t have a copy of the footage from the talk at Synth Fest, but I did USTREAM a sound check of the song earlier that weekend.
Before and after the talk, I was interacting with festival goes in the “petting zoo” room where there were all sorts of demos going on. I answered questions on AudioCubes.
In this photo I’m playing a new song called “Control Zone” using a Moog Etherwave Theremin (pitch-to-MIDI) and a single AudioCube to control virtual synthesizers with 6 dimensions of spatial control.

Yesterday I performed a live set for for the Halloween 2011 Online Streaming Concert over at Radio.Electro-Music.com. This 29 minute recording (CC-BY-NC) is a high-fidelity stereo capture from the stream in it’s entirety so get those studio headphones out or play on kick ass system!
Note that the intro was re-recorded later that day as I forgot to turn on the stream recorder till I was 45 seconds in – doh. The rest of the audio is from the actual stream with one edit to remove 30 seconds of dead air when I experienced a minor issue.
Set List:
1) "Welcome to the Inferno" Sound Design Cue from Inferno Haunted House (recording) 2) "Mad Carnival" Sound Design Cue from Inferno Haunted House (recording) 3) "Icy Caves" Sound Design Cue from Inferno Haunted House (recording) 4) "They Walk Among Us" from REBOOT (recording) 5) "I Can See Them" from the album I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS (performed live on Percussa AudioCubes) 6) "Before We Wake" from forthcoming album (performed ive on Theremin pitch-to-midi with AudioCube ) 7) "Dark Signals" from I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS (performed live AudioCubes, keys, Theremin, Tenori-On) 8) "Celebration and Voices" from I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS (performed live on Launchpad grid) 9) "Infected" from REBOOT (recording) 10) "Intercept Transmission" structured improvisation (performed live on Launchpad grid)
Thanks
Paul Harriman from Electro-Music who encouraged me to get involved with their online community and also pointed me in the right direction for tools in this regard. Paul you don’t know what you started – lol.
Jack Hertz for organizing the concert, creating a cool poster, for helping me to test my rig and for taking the time to teach me how to manage connections and hand-offs to electro-music’s ports.
Gregg Cannady who was kind enough to loan me a Theremin for the show as I broke mine just before the show (long story)
Studio Changes to Support Live Streaming of Audio and Video
This concert, and my audio/video broadcast from Boulder to the Pacific Northwest Synth Fest (talk and performance on Percussa AudioCubes) is the culmination of about 4 elapsed weeks of work to reorganize my studio space to accommodate this sort of performance. Part of that is investing the time to become very comfortable adding another layer of elements to manage while I perform live – so lots of rehearsal.
While this concert was audio only, checkout this sound check I broadcast live to USTREAM. Watch the embedded video below or watch the video on USTREAM. I really get the lights going at 3:16 :^) I plan on doing a lot more live online performances so if you want to get notified sign up for my newsletter. I’m thinking about doing some behind-the-scenes videos for those who “Join the Crowd”
Happy Halloween!
With all that I’ll just wish you a safe and happy Halloween!

I’ve just added a third performance this weekend. I’ll be beaming into the Pacific Northewest Synth Fest in Seattle from Boulder Colorado. I’ll be telepresently performing and doing a talk on AudioCubes on October 29th from 1:00-1:30PST. I’ll also be generally floating around Max Headroom style on a laptop throughout the event so he can virtually mingle.
In this talk I’ll present an overview of the Percussa AudioCubes hardware, discuss mapping the AudioCubes to control Ableton Live and Virtual Synthesizers in real-time. I’ll also perform with the cubes, deconstruct a Live song, and discuss his free template for “9 Box Method for performance, improvisation, and spontaneous tribal jams with music, sound, and light” based on AudioCubes. Lastly, I will take questions via interactive video chat.
So if your in Seattle, come find the box I’ll be hosted out and say hi :^).
I have two events coming up this Halloween weekend. First is an appearance with my old band the Head Full of Zombies on Saturday the 29th. Second is an online streaming concert of original electronic music on Electro-Music Radio on the 30th. Details below.
Radio.Electro-Music.Com Online Streaming Halloween Concert October 30th at 19:00 GMT (Noon Mountain, 2PM EST)
Radio.Electro-Music.com is hosting an online streaming Halloween on October 30th. The concert stats at 15:00 GMT and goes through 24:00 GMT with a different artist performing every 30 minutes.
I’ll be performing at 19:00GMT which is noon Mountain Time and 2PM EST. You can tune into the stream from just about any type of computer or mobile device. Simply click here to listen to the stream at the appropriate time. You can also visit http://radio.electro-music.com for more options. There is a companion Chat Room here.
I'm planning on playing both recorded and live renditions of creepier tracks from my original albums (including at least one song from the next album that has never been played live before), improvisations from the "dark side", and a few sound cues from a haunted house I did the sound design for.
I look forward to connecting with you online :^). Make sure you tell your friends.
Guest Appearance with Head Full of Zombies on Saturday Oct. 29th in Colorado Springs
Those of you who know me as an experimental instrumental electronic musician may not know that I played in the alt-rock band the for 13 years. I retired in 2003 after playing hundreds of shows.
The band continued on after I left and now after over 22 years has decided to call it quits. They are doing one final HALLOWEEN BASH Friday and Saturday October 28th & 29th at the Ritz Grill in Colorado Springs. Shows start at 9:30.
I’m dropping by Saturday night to catch up with old friends and fans and will sit in to sing a song.
I’m back from New York and I’ve had a few days to decompress and pull together some media from an epic weekend of electronic music at Electro-Music 2011 Festival in NY. This was my second year and it was really great seeing friends I met last year plus meeting new ones.
I had such a blast playing my set. Here is the set list.
All concerts were broadcast as real-time audio feeds worldwide via http://www.electro-music.com/radio including mine. Below is an audio recording of my entire set unedited as it was broadcast. The set is about 28 minutes long so if your short on time, grab the MP3 and listen later.
I played an outdoor house concert last night under a perfectly clear late summer Colorado sky. It was great fun performing in the fresh air surrounded by trees and seeing the light from my controllers bouncing off of the leaves. Next stop, Electro-Music 2011 in NY.
One of the highlights of 2010 for me was attending and performing at Electro-Music 2010 festival in NY. I’m excited to announce I’m returning again this year. For those not familiar this festival was called "The Woodstock of electronic music" by Philadelphia Inquirer.
